The Chosen Season 5: The Last Supper A Powerful Beginning

The Chosen has taken the world by storm. With over 250 million viewers (as of July 27, 2024), it’s one of the most-watched shows on the planet. And with good reason.

I recently had the honor of previewing an early release of Episode 1 of Season 5, and I am so excited to share my thoughts—because this season begins in a truly powerful way… and at the perfect time as we celebrate His death and resurrection!

Season 5 of The Chosen opens with one of the most emotional and powerful moments in the life of Jesus—the Last Supper. From the very first scene, we’re drawn into an intimate moment where Jesus encourages His disciples and prepares them for the week ahead. As he talked with them, I can only imagine what was going through their heads, their sadness and confusion. It is written on their faces. I can clearly understand what Jesus was telling them. As I watch, I am looking back on an event that happened over 2,000 years ago; for them, it was all new. They were living through the events that changed everything.

Then—plot twist—we’re taken back four days. Just like that, the story rewinds to where Season 4 left off: preparations for what we now know as the Triumphal Entry, or Palm Sunday. This first episode beautifully sets the stage for the events of Holy Week. It’s rich, raw, and deeply moving. This season will not disappoint!

If You’re New to The Chosen…

First of all—welcome! If you haven’t watched Seasons 1–4, I highly recommend binge-watching them before diving into Season 5. It’s not just about catching up on plotlines; it’s about connecting with the characters—real people with real struggles—whose lives were radically changed by Jesus. That’s one of the most beautiful aspects of The Chosen. These aren’t just names in a book anymore. They feel like friends. I have been able to visualize and listen to the characters of the Bible as they come to life. They aren’t just words spoken by faceless people on a page.

Is The Chosen Kid-Friendly?

Mostly, yes. While The Chosen is family-friendly overall, there are some intense scenes—especially as we get closer to the crucifixion—that may be a bit much for younger children. I always recommend previewing episodes before watching with little ones.

A Visual Walk Through the Gospels

Creator, writer, and director Dallas Jenkins has done something truly special with this series. He’s made the Bible feel alive. In his words, “As long as we know what Scripture is and what it isn’t, I think that we’re free to imagine and to think about these people because they were people, human beings, just like we are. And that’s often easily forgotten. We think of them as stained glass windows.”

That quote captures the heart of the series. These were real people. Their fears, their doubts, their joys—they mirror ours. Watching The Chosen has often sent me straight to my Bible. I find myself asking, “Where exactly is that story found?” or “Who said that and why?” It’s deepened my study and made Scripture feel more personal than ever.

Dallas Jenkins is very open about the creative nature of the show. He calls it “plausible fan fiction.” He and his team encourage viewers to read the Gospels alongside the series—to compare, reflect, and grow. And it’s working. I know I’m not the only one digging deeper into the Word because of this show.

Unity Across Denominations

One of the things I appreciate most is how The Chosen invites people from different Christian backgrounds to experience the life of Jesus. Jenkins puts it like this: “My operating principle is the Jesus of the Gospels is who we’re presenting.” While different faith traditions may interpret some parts of Scripture differently, the events of the Gospels—Jesus’ life on earth—are something we largely agree on.

The Last Supper in Theaters: A Three-Part Experience

In an exciting move, The Chosen: The Last Supper will be released in theaters as a special three-part event. And the timing couldn’t be more perfect—just before Easter.
