Surviving the Homeschool Winter Slump PIN
  • Save

The holidays are over, the weather keeps most of us cooped up inside, and spring feels like it’s taking its sweet time to get here. Motivation starts to dip, the excitement of a new semester wears off, and let’s be honest—colds and sniffles seem to be making the rounds more than completed schoolwork. If you’re new to homeschooling, don’t worry—this is totally normal. Every homeschool mom, whether she’s in year one or year twenty, has hit this winter wall at some point.

The next few months can feel long and draining, but they don’t have to be! A little creativity, flexibility, and fresh perspective can go a long way in keeping things engaging and preventing burnout. These are some of the things that have helped us push through—and ideas we’ve gathered from other homeschool moms along the way.

Shake Up Your Routine

  • Put down the school books for a day or more and learn with movies. Choose educational documentaries, classic films, or inspiring stories that align with your child’s interests. Make it a cozy event with blankets and popcorn.

  • Add some music. Dive into themed playlists or explore different music genres from around the world. Consider trying out free music lessons.

  • Get artsy! Take advantage of free online art classes, or try out some fun craft projects like making homemade valentines, painting a winter landscape, or learning about famous artists and recreating their styles.

Explore Outside the Box

  • Take field trips from the comfort of your home. Use virtual tours to explore museums, zoos, aquariums, or even national parks. Many websites offer free virtual experiences with activities to enhance learning.

  • Create a “hands-on only” learning month. Dive into science experiments, cooking lessons, building projects, or nature crafts. You’ll find great ideas on our Fun Ideas for Your Kids, Homeschool Science, and Active Learning Pinterest board.

Plan a Change of Scenery

  • Plan a family vacation. February is a great time to take advantage of off-season prices (avoid Presidents Day weekend!) and smaller crowds. Whether it’s a local day trip or a week-long adventure, the change of pace can be refreshing for everyone.

  • Try a staycation. Transform your home into a vacation spot by camping in the living room, setting up an at-home spa day, or creating themed evenings like “Around the World” dinners where you cook and learn about different countries.

Dive into Literature

  • Start a family book club. Pick a book to read together, and hold discussions about the characters, plot, and themes. Focus on choosing a fun and entertaining read—one that makes everyone look forward to the next chapter. Snuggle up on the couch and enjoy some quality bonding time.

  • Host a poetry tea time. Gather your favorite poems, serve some warm drinks and treats, and take turns reading or writing poetry. It’s a simple yet creative way to spend time together. Grab your Poetry Tea time planner and get started

Foster Connection and Fun

  • Start a family project. Build a puzzle together, start a garden indoors, or work on a DIY project like making bird feeders or organizing family photos into an album.

  • Host a game day or night. Play board games, card games, or even try out some educational apps and games for a mix of fun and learning.

  • Incorporate physical activity. Even if the weather keeps you indoors, you can try yoga, dance parties, or exercise videos. Moving around will boost everyone’s mood and energy levels.

Seasonal Life Skills

  • Teach winter-specific skills. Show your kids how to cook hearty winter meals, practice sewing by mending clothes, or learn practical skills like budgeting or planning.
